I worked with Dr. Arielle Miller for a little over a year. She was a mentor to me on my professional journey as an engineer. She knew of my goal to achieve my professional engineering (PE) license and my experience and challenges going through the process. I truly believe that without her mentoring and encouragement of me to re-take the Fundamentals Engineering (FE) exam I probably wouldn’t have. From the many times I had come to her office to just work on problems to her just helping to build my confidence in test-taking, her mentorship was such an important part of my professional growth. Her mentorship and encouragement kept me going even when I didn’t pass it. She had lit a fire in me to continue to chase after things I wanted and believe that they were achievable. This year I successfully passed my FE exam, applied for my Engineer-in-Training certification, and I am currently studying for my PE exam. Over 4 years later I believe that short time I was in DC and having someone like Arielle to assist me with life and educational goals was a blessing and I’m thankful!!

Arielle’s help in pursuing my degree has been invaluable! She has helped me organize my work schedule by breaking “the elephant” into small, doable tasks and providing a workable, flexible schedule for these tasks. Additionally, Arielle has the special talent of taking what you tell her and both simplifying and systemizing it. The final product of our discussions on streamlining my data analysis was easy to understand and to use. Finally, Arielle’s unique mix of encouragement and a no-nonsense attitude is so necessary while going through the hazing ritual known as graduate school. I met Dr. Arielle Miller during my time at Howard University as an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student. She was a graduate researcher on a project I got involved in as well as a TA/tutor in my Advanced Thermodynamics classes, so I was able to learn from Arielle on a personal level and in formal classrooms. It was clear that she was technically competent; able to answer follow-up questions from a confused class of undergraduates on how to solve thermodynamic problems. On top of that, she was able to identify and fill gaps in our grasp of the subject in short order (as well as make herself available for further questions after), a testament to her great people skills. She was able to connect with me as a younger engineer and share tips and tricks for entering a male-dominated industry and how to overcome potential challenges. She’s a great example of someone who is brilliant, goal-oriented, and focused while being kind and empathetic.

Arielle is a fantastic tutor and mentor. She goes out of her way to break difficult concepts down to their foundations and does so in a way where you feel comfortable to ask any question. She is also reliable and trustworthy as a mentor which was essential for me as an undergraduate student. She continuously went out of her way to assist me even if she didn’t know the answers herself. She would take the time to look up those questions and direct me to the resource or person that could help me, and for that, I will always be thankful. You won’t regret trusting Arielle and working with her on your academic or professional journey.

I loved working with Dr. Miller because she embodied the technical experience, project management skills, and social adeptness required to be a great research and writing coach. What sets Dr. Miller apart from other professional coaches, is that she brings years of experience in both the public and private sectors and has successfully navigated diverse academic and professional communities throughout her career. All while maintaining an integral standard of excellence and uncompromising commitment to treating others and being treated fairly. As a result, she has been able to understand challenges that were unique to the various “-isms” I faced as an academic, a person in mid-career pivot, and a woman of color. More importantly, she shares in a non-prescriptive way, what she and others have found to be effective paths forward, as I establish my definition of success.
